In it, you’ll also see which gates and channels are activated in your chart. While we won’t be going into each individual gate and channel in this post, we will be sharing how the gates and channels are the MOST important part of your chart and how they actually define your Type, Strategy, and Authority. 

The gates and channels tie the story of your chart together. Without them, you just have a “shopping list” of your attributes, piecemeal and not connected. But you are a holistic being. The way that you utilize your Strategy and Authority and operate as your Type is unique based on the consistent quantum intelligences of the gates and channels defined in your chart. 

So, the intention of this post is to ease you into the journey of your gates and channels so you can integrate their wisdom into what you already might know about your Type, Strategy, Authority, and Profile. 

The defined gates and channels in your chart are the unique gifts and talents that are natural to you and that you can always rely on. They govern ho how energy uniquely flows through your body. 

The Gates

There are 64 gates in your human design chart, spread throughout the 9 centers.

They are always in the same location for each person’s chart. Gate 1 is always in the G Center, the diamond-shaped center in the middle of the chart. 

Gate 64 is always in the Head Center at the top of the chart. If you want to learn more about your centers, check out this post.

What changes in each person’s chart is which of those gates are defined or activated.

Here is an example chart that was generated through our site here. Each gate that is “colored in” with a little circle has been defined/activated in the chart.

In the columns to the left and to the right of the chart, you can see gate numbers corresponding to planetary symbols. These 2 columns are representing the locations of the planets at 2 distinct moments in time. 

The column on the right side of the chart, the “Personality” column is showing the locations of the planets at the moment of your birth. This is the moment that, for the first time, you entered the world and started impacting the global energetic field with your own energetic field separate from your mother. This is when your personality was born, your identity, your ego. So the gates defined by these planets represent gifts and talents that you’re more likely to be consciously aware of, as they’re tied to your ego and identity. 

On the left side of the chart, the “Design” column is showing the locations of the planets at the moment 88 days before your birth. According to the channeled message of Human Design received by Ra Uru Hu in the 1980s, this is the moment your Soul enters your body. So these are the gifts and talents more connected to your “Soul” or to your “Higher Self” or to “Pure Consciousness”, whatever model more resonates with you. So you may not be as aware of these gifts and talents as they’ll be operating more at the unconscious, natural level. 

Now, each of the 64 gates in your chart correspond to the 64 Hexagrams of the I’Ching. The I’Ching is an ancient Chinese philosophical wisdom. Over 5000 years ago, Chinese philosophers observed nature and distilled the wisdom from nature into these 64 archetypal moments. The I’Ching was consulted for support in one’s life and it’s poetic verses didn’t “give answers”. It helped the seeker reconnect to the wisdom of nature within them. 

And the Gates of your Human Design chart carry the wisdom of these 64 archetypal moments of nature. Each Hexagram has a unique number from 1 to 64 that directly corresponds to the Gate number in your chart. 

Now in human design, the I’Ching Wheel is mapped to the Astrological Wheel, which you’ll see in the image below. The I’Ching wheel utilized is the one ascribed to Fu Xi and orders/arranges the hexagrams around the wheel into four quarters based on the four seasonal energies. These four quarters are important in Human Design but that’s a story for another day.

The Astrological Wheel used is that of Tropical Astrology which divides the sky into equal sections. So, as the planets move through the sky, they are also traveling through the Gates/Hexagrams that are mapped to the astrological markers they’re passing through. 

And at the 2 distinct moments when your Soul enters your body (left column) and when you enter the world (right column), the positions of the planets can tell you what unique energetics were imprinted into your body, creating the unique vehicle that is your body. 

This imprinting happens through sub-atomic particles called neutrinos. In the 80s, the channeled message that Ra received mentioned subatomic particles that had mass and therefore carried the information of anything it passed through (planets, people, objects, etc.). Ten years later, scientists discovered neutrinos, subatomic particles with infinitesimal amount of mass that carry information as they pass through objects, people, planets, etc. There are trillions of them passing through you in each moment.

And so, at these 2 distinct moments, the neutrinos that hit your body imprint you with unique energetic mechanics: how energy consistently and uniquely flows through your body. And we can derive what your energetic mechanics are by looking at what Gates the planets were traveling through at those 2 distinct moments. 

And we can interpret your mechanics through the wisdom of the I’Ching. 

Whew! I know that was a lot. But this is so important to understand so that you don’t look at your chart as a shopping list of Type, Strategy, Authority, and Profile. 

That would just be using the system to put you in a box. And there are plenty of other systems out there that put you into boxes. 

This is about climbing out of all the boxes you’ve been put in, or put yourself in, and aligning to how you’re naturally designed to live. Type is just one aspect of your design and, taken alone, it’s useful but can be misleading. 

Your Gates and Channels Define Your Type, Strategy, Authority, and Profile

Each of the gates in your chart is a deep energetic intelligence beyond the mind and beyond logic. It’s the wisdom of nature. It’s the wisdom of the quantum subatomic informational consciousness field you are swimming in and inseparable from. 

Your Human Design chart gives you the map to interpret this information accurately and use it to move through your Life with so much more ease, unfiltered by the worries of the mind. 

And the gates are the foundation of that. Two defined gates that are connected define a channel. A channel defines 2 centers. A center defines your Authority. Your combination of Centers defines your Type and Strategy. 

So the gates are the foundation of your chart. 

So with this connection of the planets to the 64 hexagrams, to the 64 gates, this is how we start to see what Gates are defined in your chart.

The colored in gates and channels in your chart are the gifts and talents that you can rely and count on. They are consistent within you. The gates that are NOT defined in your chart are more inconsistent within you. As the planets travel through the sky and you travel through the auras of other people, these undefined gates and channels in your chart will “light up” temporarily. 

So while they aren’t consistent within you, you will get access to them as you move through the world. 

It’s just that the energy will be flowing through your chart in different inconsistent ways in the undefined parts of your chart. 

This is why it’s important to count on what IS defined in your chart because energy will always flow in a consistent way in those areas. And it’s important to reconnect to this natural way that energy flows through your chart. So you’re flowing with it and not against it. 

If you’re a Reflector, you won’t have any channels or centers defined but you will have gates defined. So for you, it’s important to follow your Strategy: To Wait Out the Lunar Cycle. The Moon takes about 28 days to travel around the Astrological / I’Ching Wheel. During that time, it will pass through every gate on the wheel. As it does that, it will activate various Gates and Channels in your chart. So over a 28-day period, you can find the consistency and reliability you can count on as you begin to understand these cycles happening in you and your life. 

Your Channels

When 2 Gates on either side of a channel are defined in your chart, that channel becomes defined. This creates a unique consistent energy flow between the 2 centers that channel connects, thus also defining those 2 centers. So, anywhere in your char

t where you see a channel defined, you’ll also see the 2 centers on either side of it defined. And as each center corresponds to an area of your life, what this means is that you have a consistent way of operating in these 2 areas of life AND there’s a consistent way energy flows between those 2 areas. 

So, as you begin to learn and interpret the meanings of the 64 gates and 36 channels in your chart, you’ll begin to understand the energetic quantum wisdom that you can count on within you. This is the wisdom that you can follow through your Strategy and Authority at a high level. And that you can align to very uniquely through your Gates and Channels..

The channel circled in this image, channel 27-50 is defining the energy flow between the Sacral Center and Splenic Center. And, when the Sacral Center is defined in any chart, the Type of this individual is a Generator, since they have consistent Sacral Energy to generate with.  And, since in this chart, the Solar Plexus Center is not defined, the Authority of this chart is a Sacral Authority. 

So you can see how the Type, Strategy, and Authority all come from the building blocks of the Gates and Channels. If we were look at a similar chart that also had channel 59-6 defined, that would define the Solar Plexus Center and so this chart would then be an Emotional Authority:

The Types of Channels in Your Chart

There are three circuit groups of channels in your chart:

1. Individual Circuitry
2. Collective Circuitry 
3. Tribal Circuitry

The individual channels in the Individual Circuit Group are the channels of self-empowerment. 

You can see the positions of these channels are in the center column and the inside of your chart. And so they are corresponding more to your personal journey, hence the theme of self-empowerment. 

The collective channels in the Collective Circuit Group are the channels of sharing.  

You can see the positions of these channels are on the outside of your chart, connecting more to the outside world, hence the theme of sharing. It’s about how you share and interact with the rest of the world.

The tribal channels in the Tribal Circuit Group are the channels of support.

This is a unique little group of channels that is very much about the tribe and ensuring that everyone in the tribe is supported and can rise up. It’s less about you as an individual and more about the whole with these channels.

The individual circuitry, collective circuitry, and a tribal circuitry can give you a feel for the energetic flavor of the gifts and talents in your chart based on what channels you have defined and what circuit groups they are a part of. 

When you start to dive into your Gates and Channels is when you really get to start living your design again. It’s when you really can remember who you are through your chart and start to unlearn all the ways of being that you’ve picked up along the way that is preventing you from living that design.

And that’s where the meat of Human Design is. Theoretically understanding your part is the LEAST important part. To really get the value of your chart, you need to unlearn all of the learned behaviors you chose along the way in order to protect yourself, create safety, and navigate your circumstances. 

In Human Design, this is called the “not-self”. And I designed the Phoenix Method to help you unravel the ways you have been conditioned to operate as the “not-self” so you can return to your Truth. And the only way this can be done sustainably is through Awareness, Acceptance, and Alignment – the 3 A’s.
