On my personal development journey, so many people told me that I needed to get out of my head and into my heart. But nobody could really put words to how. And my mind was very committed to being in charge and not letting my heart guide the way into the unknown and illogical. So it took quite a while and a lot of practice to build the habit of dropping my awareness into the body, into the chest, and into the heart. So I could actually operate my life from my heart instead of my mind.
So, in order to share how you can finally get out of your head and into your heart, I’m going to first share about how you got from your heart into your head in the first place. Because you were born following your heart. It’s your natural way. Following your head is taught.
And I don’t know about you but, most of the time when I’m stuck in my head, it’s because I’m beating myself up about something. Or thinking I could have done better. Or analyzing what is the right choice to make at a crossroads. Often, this leads to pros and cons list that just create more confusion. Or I start to judge my shortcomings and spend time trying to identify what I need to fix in myself.
Sound familiar?
This is ineffective and mostly, if not completely, a waste of time. Because the answers to Life, Love, and Liberty won’t be found through the logic of the mind. At least not without the wisdom of the Heart having a voice too.
So the path here is to actually understand the genesis of these mental patterns of trying to …
- fix yourself
- force a situation
- or use your mind to figure out a solution.
This is what you learned to do as you were taught by society to ignore the wisdom that is beyond logic. You were taught to figure it all out instead of simply trusting what you know deep within you… the wisdom of your Heart and Body.
And so, now there’s years of practice and neurological patterning that have you trusting your logic over your wisdom. This is what brought you out of your heart and into your head in the first place… and why it can feel so hard to follow the impulses of wisdom over the logic of knowledge.
And, while most people have gone through this “conditioning” by society, each person goes through it uniquely. Your unique circumstances growing up determine the specific patterns your mind uses to avoid being in the discomfort of following your Heart into the unknown.
So the key to getting out of your head and back into your heart is to get curious about the genesis point of your mind’s protective patterns and how it uses logic to suppress your wisdom instead of support it.
Usually, these patterns are generated back in childhood. When you go through something challenging during childhood, big or small, in any way where “being fully you” wasn’t celebrated and accepted… or in any way where it was discouraged… the pain of that experience cues the mind to create neural networks devoted to making sure you don’t go through that pain again. After all, there’s no more intense emotional pain than not being accepted for who you really are and your truest expression.
These neural networks, over years, become unconscious protection patterns. These neural networks are frozen in time, not developing with the rest of the mind. And one of the major ways these patterns protect you is by suppressing/ignoring the wisdom of your Heart. Because you learned that that wisdom wasn’t acceptable, safe, or valid.
So the invitation in this post is for you to explore/journal about your specific childhood journey and the ways that you learned to create safety by suppressing yourself. To explore the ways, no matter the good intentions of those around you, that you were taught that “being fully you” wasn’t correct or acceptable. And all the protection patterns and mental approximations you created in order to not have to feel the pain of that kind of rejection.
It’s those very approximations that are still operating from your unconscious mind today, still trying to protect you on auto-pilot. By bringing awareness to them, you can slow down the firing of the electricity in those neural networks to create space for something new.
To create space to take a deep breath and bring your awareness out of your mind and into your Heart. And to create space to begin to take action based on the wisdom of your Heart, being gentle and compassionate with the inner children frozen in time in those neural networks trying to protect you from a pain long in your past.
To, with breath, love, and compassion, close your eyes and picture that inner child, the younger version of you, and the circumstances they grew up in. To acknowledge and realize the bravery of the protection pattern you created back then. As a brave, perseverant child.
And to see if you can feel gratitude and empathy for this part of you. For the very pattern you’ve been trying to fix, force your way around, and figure out a solution too. There’s no solution because there’s no problem.
By not just thinking about this but actually feeling the empathy and gratitude for yourself, you truly exit the mind and enter the heart. And it’s a tool you can repeat time and time again. You can practice with gentleness the journey back to self-compassion for these patterns. And that is what creates the space for the patterns to shift: through love instead of fixing and self-defeat.
